Extensively traveling the world (yes, with babies), I visited elementary schools to interview students, parents, teachers, and administrators. I’ve repeatedly heard calls to address the gap between how mobile life has become and how static education has remained.
A golden mean between home education and schools is possible in the form of decentralized synchronous schooling. In my interview, I suggest a way in which we can significantly improve the educational outcome students and family lives at scale.
To continuously improve the quality of elementary education, we need accurate data about what the students know, what they can do, and to what depth. Gathering and organizing detailed data in existing schooling forms isn’t possible.
We must delicately solve “career vs. kids dilemma” by appropriating primary schooling to how mobile work and lives have become. We aim for the wellbeing of students; by supporting the families and providing physical kinship as a significant component.
We should emphasize the art of teaching that, when done well, has an exceptional value.
My team and I are working on building bina, an elementary school for families that move in a connected world. Here is how we do it:
Keeping the student/teacher ratio low. All lessons are active, collaborative, and real-time with world-class teachers and peers.
We promote informed parenting, and actively connecting people physically together, creating care clusters.
